Trapeze & Dance Choreography:

From Floor to Air

Most contemporary circus acts begin on the floor, and this workshop explores how intentional choices shape movement and style from the very first moment. Using low trapezes, students will investigate the how, what and why with the apparatus, how improvisation can be used as a tool for creating choreography and create choreo based on lessons in class.

This class focuses on developing a strong movement voice through quality of action, transitions, and level changes. Working from the floor to low trapeze, mid-level, and into the air, participants will explore how to create their own style and translate it into clear, expressive physical movement. Ideal for students interested in creating original work and performing.

Prerequisites

  • Prior aerial experience (trapeze or another apparatus)

  • Comfortable working independently on a low trapeze

  • Willingness to improvise, be vulnerable on front of peers and explore movement quality

Aeronautics of Aerial

Get ready for some Circus Science! How does flipping on a steel bar and tying ourselves up in ropes influence our nervous system? How do we draw upon our strengths and minimize our weaknesses to build a sustainable, lifelong aerial practice? Join circus artist, licensed occupational therapist, and ergonomics engineer, Sarah Arrigo, for a hands-on exploration that takes our brains and bodies to the air.

In this 2 hour workshop we will apply the scientific principles of sensory integration, kinesiology and ergonomics to our aerial practice and learn some new trapeze tricks while we’re at it!  We’ll get curious, hypothesize, and apply our findings to create dynamic aerial movement.

Participants will walk away with:

  • An understanding of neurodiversity, how we receive and organize information through our senses and apply it to aerial movement.

  • A discovery of your unique sensory system and applications to achieve your circus goals.

  • A basic understanding of neurodiversity, kinesiology, ergonomics and strategies on how to find the fit between you and your trapeze and move more effectively.
